SLED Contract Spotlight on The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC)

While it’s a niche contract, it has the potential to reach into all but three states

It’s often the “biggest” and “broadest” contract vehicles that gain the most attention in the public sector. And with good reason, as organizations with limited time and resources often find many opportunities in such contract vehicles. However,  the Midwestern Higher Education Compact, or MHEC, (Midwestern Higher Education Compact mhec.org) IT Security Services Contract, while being a niche contract, is worth examining.  It is unique and worth considering for those organizations that are searching for SLED opportunities.  

It is one of four regional interstate compacts in the United States. The three other compacts are the New England Board of Higher Education, or NEBHE( Home | New England Board of Higher Education nebhe.org), the Southern Regional Education Board, or SREB (Southern Regional Education Board sreb.org), and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, or WICHE (Home – WICHE). If mutually advantageous, MHEC’s contracts may be extended to these compacts and their members, providing the potential to reach the education channel in all but three states.

MHEC is a legislatively established interstate compact with broad contracting authority. It serves as a lead public agency on behalf of the member states in collaboration with a committee of subject-matter experts. This means that MHEC has been built into legislative policies that govern procurement for those eligible members.

The administrative fee is reinvested with the respective Compact organizations. This reinvestment helps states reinvest in IT and with people.
