The Department of Defense is committed to speeding up cloud adoption in 2018 and beyond, and many DOD agencies are exploring their own capabilities and plans as they embark on their journey to the commercial cloud.

But with so many moving parts, it’s hard to follow how cloud will actually take shape at the department. We recently peeled back the layers of DOD’s cloud strategy in a webinar so that companies know how to talk to their defense clients about their biggest challenges and potential solutions.

New Background Investigations System Has Significant IT Needs

When more than 21 million background investigation records get stolen, you can bet your bottom taxpayer dollars that changes are afoot.

Enter the National Background Investigations Bureau (NBIB), the name of the new organization that will host an entirely new (and hopefully improved) background investigations system. Organizationally, this office will fall under the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), but the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) will handle the development and operation of the underlying IT system infrastructure.

What Really is the Future of Cloud?

There’s a real chance that 5-10 years from now, the way we deliver technology to government will fundamentally change. We just need to make sure we can maintain the same level of partnership and focus on the government mission, while providing the same level of choice in what the technology industry has to offer.

That was my answer to “What is the future of cloud?”—one of the many discussions among industry and government cloud experts at the recent Federal Executive Forum on Secure Cloud Computing in Government 2016. The radio program was broadcast on Federal News Radio with moderator Jim Flyzik directing the conversation.

The good news is new federal policy, renewed emphasis from government leaders, and updated acquisition methods are creating opportunities for industry to sell technology as a service to the federal government.

DISA at the Center of Pentagon’s IT Modernization Plans

Despite its relatively small size within DOD, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has an outsize role in the Pentagon’s IT initiatives. When it comes to technology, DISA’s efforts are structured around four strategic goals:

  • Evolve the Joint Information Environment
  • Provide Joint Command and Control
  • Operate and Assure the Enterprise
  • Optimize Department Investments

These goals are in keeping with DISA’s role as the purveyor of command and control systems, enterprise infrastructure, and storage for the Department. DISA’s mission also places it in the unique position of be in the center of every facet of the Pentagon’s overall IT modernization goals and thus a key insertion point for the product community. DOD CIO Teri Takai’s “10-Point Plan for IT Modernization” is aimed at meeting the Department’s IT challenges and is a key facet of its overall goals of cutting waste and saving money. Several of those modernization goals with DISA’s role in them are as follows:
