Winners in the FY21 Defense Budget Request

The President is requesting $705.4B in DOD funding for FY21, which is a modest 0.1% increase from FY20. The biggest winner by far is U.S. Space Force, but there are still plenty of opportunities across DOD and the services for IT vendors.

Announced in FY20, funding for Space Force in FY21 is largely focused on providing funding for the establishment of the organization as a whole. More details regarding metrics and objectives are anticipated to be further developed over the next few years. From what we know at this time, automation, infrastructure, cyber and data analytics are anticipated to be key areas of interest for them.

The Marine Corps will utilize a major portion of Navy’s IT budget for everything from cyber and incident response tools to data visualization and analytics.Here is part II of our breakdown of the Navy’s IT focus areas through FY18 and the best ways the private sector can generate new leads. The Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) is the acquisition command for the U.S. Marine Corps. In my conversations with the service, a consistent refrain is that it wants to take capabilities that exist on a camp or garrison to the battlefield. So the Marine Corps is looking for technologies that are lightweight, flexible and that can be used at the lowest levels.

WEST 2014 Conference Sheds Light on Acquisition Priorities for the Sea Services

Last week industry and government met for the largest event on the West Coast for the maritime services (Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) and the contractors that support them. Many senior military leaders attended and spoke about the direction they are headed and how industry can help. Their remarks echoed previous announcements that the U.S. as a whole (not just the military) is transitioning to face a variety of interconnected 21st Century threats. The Pacific region is a big part of the equation and since it is largely a maritime environment; the Sea Services are at the forefront.
